Organization Overview

The men and women of Electric Operations ensure the delivery of clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration and emergency response.


Within Electric Operations, the Major Projects and Programs (MPP) organization is responsible for the end-to-end project management, design, estimating and construction of all distribution and transmission projects. These projects and programs include Vegetation Management, State Infrastructure, Pole Replacement, Rule 20, Capacity/Reliability Planning, Storage, WRO, and Mobile Home. MPP is also responsible for overseeing two major programs in our wildfire risk mitigations plans, the system hardening of distribution line miles and the system inspection of all distribution assets. MPP strives to deliver certainty in work execution by performing work safely, effectively and efficiently.


Position Summary

Innovative Design Solutions is responsible for developing new tools and technologies that will support the Central Design & Estimating organization with MPP. The Innovative Design group promotes a culture of continuous improvement of all tools, processes and procedures.

Innovative Design Solutions is looking for a talented summer intern to help support the research, development and deployment of a variety of initiatives related to:

  • Mobile field data collection
  • Automation of redundant processes
  • Integration of GIS technology with legacy systems
  • Analysis, processing and storage of digital imagery
  • Pole loading calculations and associated engineering data


The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support initiatives related to the topics listed above, while working with a team of Subject Matter Experts. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Electric Operations organization through the work they will be performing.



Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earning a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering or other related engineering field (students MUST be continuing education towards degree during and/or after internship) 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or obtain one at least 30 days prior to start date.


  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Experience in project management and/or product development
  • Familiarity with computer languages, such as VBA, R, C++, HTML, Python
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
