Department Overview

It is accountable for ensuring safe, accurate and reliable meters and is part of the cross-functional team that delivers safe and reliable gas and electricity and provides accurate bills to our Customers. This department's objectives are achieved through strategic and operational meter asset planning, management, meter specifications, troubleshooting, repair, gas regulatory compliance under CPUC GO58A, meter information support, and a focus on continuous improvement.
The Gas and Electric Meter Services (GEMS) Plant, within the Meter Services and Engineering department, performs quality assurance (QA) activities on new gas and electric meter assets; accuracy tests on removed gas and electric meters from service for statistical analysis; coordinates Return Material Authorizations (RMA) with suppliers for failed assets; and repairs high value meters for reuse in the field.
Position Summary
Provides engineering services for the Gas and Electric Meter Testing Facility (GEMS). Partners with Gas and Electric T&D Engineering department as well as with Customer Care. Supports the development of new metering standards as requested.
This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and Fremont, CA based on business needs.
PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed between the entry point and the middle of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors. This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.
A reasonable salary range is:
Bay Area Minimum: $102,000
Bay Area Mid-point: $132,000
Bay Area Maximum: $162,000
Job Responsibilities
- DIRECTION / OVERSIGHT: Provides direction & oversight of all engineering activities for PG&E's Meter Testing Facility (GEMS). Works with Business Planners, and the Gas and Electric Engineering staff; ensures all GEMS metering projects, initiatives, and engineering commitments (scope, schedule, cost, quality, & deliverables) are fully met. Works with the GEMS Leadership; adjusts in-house Quality Assurance testing, and ensures that quality assurance testing is managed and implemented in a cost-effectively manner to meet all commitments. Provides technical oversight in Gas and Electric Metering expertise and ensures appropriate Engineering Leadership and other Engineering involvement is used to ensure technical quality in all discipline work. Ensures that good business decisions are made at GEMS when resolving problems so that future is not compromised.
- OPERATIONAL / REGULATORY / ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE: Actively promotes and supports through personal involvement and key initiatives such as Provide maintenance, Gas and Electric Standards, Work Procedures, Metering Assessment, Risk Management, Asset Management, Long & Short Term Planning, and Project Management. Provides support to ensure compliance with existing Work Practices, CPUC requirements and interface with appropriate Agency personnel to continue development of excellent regulatory relationships. Ensures all projects & assign maintenance activities are based upon environmentally sound design & construction plans; with all permits & agency approvals received in a timely manner, and requirements are rigorously monitored to assure full compliance, resulting in no Notice of Violations (NOVs).
- SAFETY: Reinforces "Safety First" mindset through actively supporting safety culture changes, local & central safety committees, and personal safety accountability for self & each employee. Ensures safety is incorporated into all designs, work with safety committees to engineer away safety hazards, ensure root-cause investigations and follow-up of injuries & near misses are performed in a timely manner. Develops programmatic solutions for safety hazards with a Safety goal is zero injuries and zero auto accidents.
- STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRAM OVERSIGHT Works with the Gas and Electric T&D Engineering departments to set quality assurance targets, Testing equipment maintenance program, metrics, and develops and implements strategic and tactical planning necessary to achieve these tasks. Develops systems and procedures for continuous improvement, and assures company and department policies and procedures are followed.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
- Job-related experience, 5 years
- Experience in meter operations, job-related

- Ability to lead equipment acceptances, runoffs, and time studies
- Ability to create equipment specifications to meet safety, testing, and operations requirements
- Knowledgeable in industrial equipment safety including NFPA79 and OSHA requirements

- Ability to analyze data and utilize the data to make decisions
- Adaptable to changing environments and ability to learn new technologies quickly

- Project Management experience
- PE-Professional Engineer license
- Masters Degree in Business Administration or job-related discipline or equivalent experience
