Department Overview

Applied Technology Services (ATS) has been providing technology-based, innovative, high-value services to the Company for over 40 years. ATS is a multidisciplinary team of over 120 engineers, scientists, and technicians. The ATS vision is to be a forward-thinking, technological leader providing high-value solutions and services needed across the Company.

Position Summary

The Numerical Analysis Engineering Internship position is located within the ATS Mechanical Engineering and Numerical Analysis group. This team performs engineering simulations on asset condition assessment and remaining life determination, product design and optimization, failure simulation and root cause support. The group supports a wide range of Company mechanical engineering needs from hydroelectric power plants, electric transmission and distribution networks, and gas pipelines.

The Numerical Analysis Engineering Intern will support ongoing work in computer modeling and engineering simulation, and validation of engineering designs. Work may range from general technical consultation to comprehensive engineering analysis through engineering simulations and field investigations. The successful candidate is expected to support senior engineers on project tasks including but not limited to:

  • Create computer models from vendor supplied assembly models, engineering drawings or laser scans of actual geometry
  • Clean up computer models to make them suitable for engineering simulations.  This includes extracting parts of interest from a large assembly, removing non-load bearing bodies, simplifying design features, straightening and smoothing of geometry, and patching up missing data from laser scans.
  • Generate mesh for the computer models, apply boundary conditions and loads, and perform engineering simulations.
  • Perform sensitivity studies to validate the engineering simulations.  This can include evaluating multiple loading scenarios to establish trends.
  • Perform data analysis and trend assessment to support documentation.
  • Present results, trends, and findings to senior engineers or department leaders.
  • Support field investigations, pilot demonstrations, and technology implementation projects.

This position is onsite, working from your assigned work location 5 days a week. The work location is San Ramon, CA.
