Position Summary

The NDE Engineering Internship position is located within the ATS NDE (Non-destructive Examination) group. The NDE team operates advanced laboratories and field operations focused on inspection technology development, asset condition assessment, and integrity management. The group supports a wide range of Company initiatives including pipeline safety, electric asset reliability, emerging inspection technologies, robotics, and advanced NDE methods.

 

The NDE Engineering Intern will support ongoing work in inspection technology evaluation, data analysis, and field validation of NDE tools and methods. Work may range from general technical consultation to comprehensive support from planning through execution of laboratory and field investigations. The successful candidate is expected to support senior engineering staff on key initiatives including but not limited to:

  • Evaluating and validating NDE technologies for gas, hydro and electric infrastructure (e.g., ultrasonic (phased array, and drones), radiography, eddy current, EMAT).
  • Supporting laboratory testing of materials, welds, and components to characterize degradation mechanisms such as corrosion, cracking, and mechanical damage.
  • Assisting with development and deployment of custom inspection tools and robotic platforms.
  • Performing data analysis and reporting to support asset integrity assessments.
  • Supporting field inspections, pilot demonstrations, and technology implementation projects.

 

This position is onsite, working from your assigned work location 5 days a week. The work location is San Ramon, CA. 

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

 

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37. 

 

Job Responsibilities

Supporting senior staff with:

  • Laboratory testing of materials, welds, and components
  • Evaluation and validation of NDE technologies and inspection tools
  • Data acquisition, signal processing, and analytics
  • Field inspections and technology deployment
  • Materials characterization and failure analysis support
  • Robotics, sensor integration, and tool development
  • Documentation, reporting, and engineering analysis
  • Travel may be required; frequency depends on assignment and is typically less than 10%.

 

The successful intern will have the opportunity to learn about these activities while working with a team of experienced engineers, scientists, and technicians. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Gas and Electric Engineering organizations through the work they will be performing.

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Welding Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline at an accredited university
  • Students must be continuing their education toward their degree during and/or after the internship

 

Desired:

  • EIT or FE certification
  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative and major coursework
  • Engineering experience in utilities, inspection services, materials labs, manufacturing, or engineering consulting
  • Familiarity with NDE methods (UT, RT, ET, MT, PT, AE, thermography)
  • Experience with data analysis tools (MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, etc.)
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
