Department Overview

 

Diablo Canyon Power Plant's (DCPP) Mechanical Maintenance Department is responsible for performing maintenance and modification to plant systems, structures, and components during non-outage and refueling outages periods.

 

Position Summary

 

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E.

 

This journey level position’s principal duties consist of performing welding and mechanical related activities including working in radiological controlled areas in support of equipment maintenance and/or modification tasks at a commercial nuclear power plant.

 

To obtain and maintain employment and unescorted access at DCPP, you must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screen, a security background check, psychological screen, computer-based training, and be subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreement, and internal equity. 

 

Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the starting hourly rate range for this position is $65.27 to $71.81, subject to collectively bargained wage increases.​

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Perform journey level Certified Welder duties engaged in repairing, installing, maintaining, modifying, and welding using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), and brazing on all types of power plant equipment in accordance with specific weld procedures as described in PG&E's Nuclear Welding Control Manual.  
  • Wear and work in a respirator while working in and around radiation/contamination fields and environmental hazardous areas of the power plant
  • Successfully complete radiation worker and department specific training
  • Pass respirator qualification, which entails passing a medical examination, respirator training, and fit testing requirements

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds a minimum of one time a day  
  • Ability to transport material up to 500 pounds in carts; work in confined spaces; access equipment through an 18 inch diameter manhole; and work in up to 120 degree Fahrenheit environment
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and twist; climb including ladders and stairs; and stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to work at heights (such as 150 feet or higher) on stationary scaffolds
  • Ability and willingness to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) ) including but

            not limited to hard hat: safety glasses; safety goggles; gloves; full body fall protection harnesses; ear plugs

      and/or muffs; safety vests; raingear; fire resistant clothing consisting of long sleeve shirts and pants.

  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, night shifts, extended hours, holidays, with rotating days off, and be available for emergency overtime.
  • Ability to successfully complete radiation worker and department specific training
  • Ability to pass respirator qualification, which entails passing a medical examination, respirator training, and fit testing requirements
  • Ability to wear and work in a respirator in radioactivity contaminated and/or environmentally hazardous areas of the plant
  • Ability to work in and around radiation/contamination fields and environmental hazard areas

    • TEST 1 Process: GTAW + SMAW on 6" schedule160 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with open butt root configuration using ER70S2 and E7018 filler material with no internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 2 Process: SMAW on 2" schedule 80 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with backing root configuration using E7018 filler material with no internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 3 Process: GTAW on 2" schedule 80 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with open butt root configuration using ER309 filler material with internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 4 Process: GTAW + SMAW on 6" schedule160 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with open butt root configuration using ER309 and E309 filler material with internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 5 Process: SMAW on 2" schedule 80 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with backing root configuration using E309 filler material with no internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 6 Process: GTAW on 2" schedule 80 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with consumable insert INMS-1butt root configuration using ER70S-2 filler material with no internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 7 Process: SMAW on 2" schedule 80 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with backing root configuration using EniCrFe-3 filler material with no internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 8 Process: GTAW on 2" schedule 80 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with open butt root configuration using ErNiCr-3 filler material with internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 9 Process: GTAW on 3/16" diameter tubing test coupon in the 6G position with socket root configuration using ER316 filler material with internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 10 Process: SMAW on 2" schedule 80 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with open butt root configuration using E6010 filler material with no internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 11 Process: Brazing on copper pipe test coupon in the 6G position with lap root configuration using BCup-5 filler material with no internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 12 Process: Brazing on copper pipe test coupon in the 6G position with lap root configuration using Bag-7 filler material with no internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 13 Process: GTAW on 6" schedule120 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with open butt root configuration using ER70S2 filler material with no internal backing gas purge.

 

    • TEST 14 Process: GTAW on 2" schedule80 pipe test coupon in the 6G position with open butt root configuration using ER70S2 filler material with no internal backing gas purge.

 

Desired:

 

  • 1 year demonstrated experience performing welding activities at a nuclear power facility.
  • Experience working at Diablo Canyon Power Plant.
  • Related welding and/or mechanical maintenance training such as through the military, craft apprenticeship, trade or technical school, power plant or employer (i.e., valves, pumps, pipefitting, bolting, rigging)
  • Proficient in the use of hand, portable power and free standing tools such as bench grinders and drill presses
  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand drawings including piping and instrument diagrams, piping isometrics, original equipment manufacturers’ maintenance manuals
