Department Overview

 

The Diablo Canyon Fire Department is an all-risk full-service emergency response organization, responding to a variety of emergencies including fires, hazardous materials incidents, medical aids, and technical rescues, as well as supporting monthly surveillance/inspection procedures for all fire valves, fire hoses, hose reel stations, fire extinguishers, and fire barriers and barrier penetrations. Our area of responsibility is the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant and the wildlands immediately surrounding the power plant.

 

Position Summary

 

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E.
 

If you move forward in the process, you will have to come to the San Luis Obispo area up to five separate occasions at your own expenses to complete a written exam, a physical  agility test, an interview, a ride-a-long, and a fitness for duty physical before you start.  We do not reimburse your expenses, and we do not pay for relocation.

 

This position responds to emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance at all hours while on site, performs maintenance on fire extinguishers and hydrostatic testing of fire hoses, and conducts monthly fire protection equipment surveillance tests.

 

To obtain and maintain employment, you must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screen, a security background check for unescorted access to the plant, a psychological screen, a physical, and be subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreement, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors. ​

Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the starting hourly rate range for this position is $58.57 to $63.19, subject to collectively bargained wage increases.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform  emergency fire ground tasks and functions, and fire station maintenance duties.
  • Perform maintenance on plant fire extinguishers
  • Perform annual fire hose hydrostatic testing
  • Maintain confined space/technical rescue skills
  • Maintain Hazardous Materials incident response skills and certifications
  • Maintain EMT/CPR/AED skills and certification
  • Maintain fire apparatus driver/operator skills
  • Routine maintenance and operation of all emergency response equipment
  • Maintain a status of being physically fit
  • Maintain all required training qualifications (both fire and plant)
  • Participate in periodic fire drills
  • Perform other duties and assignments as deemed necessary by FD leadership

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED
  • CA Class C Driver’s license or equivalent by Day 1 of hire
  • Ability to obtain a California Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License with Firefighter, Tank and Air Brake within 12 months of hire with PG&E’s to provide necessary training
  • Possess current California Firefighter I certification
  • Possess current California EMT I/CPR/AED Certification
  • Ability and willingness to work a rotating 48-hour shift without access to off-site amenities or family
  • Ability and willingness to work on weekends and holidays.
  • Must pass comprehensive Company Medical Exam as a condition of employment.  This includes a strength test, muscular endurance test, cardiovascular endurance test, demonstration of sufficient flexibility, Body Fat Test (<20% males and <27% females), and a blood pressure exam.

 

Desired:

  • Minimum of 3 years of firefighting experience
  • California Class C Firefighter endorsement  or Class B or higher Commercial Driver’ License with Firefighter, Tank and Air Brake
  • Experience working at DCPP
  • California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) HazMat Technician or Specialist certification
  • Driver/Operator certification
  • Confined Space Rescue Technician certification
  • Firefighter II certification
  • Possess current CSFM Rescue Systems 1 certification
  • Demonstrated experience using strong team building skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nuclear plant systems and structures
