Department Overview

PG&E’s Power Generation Department manages and operates the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation. These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevation in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains include 68 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstocks, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

 

Job Summary

The Generation Supervisor is responsible for the 24/7 safe operation, performance, reliability, adherence to regulatory requirements and the day-to-day operation of their respective watershed and facilities.  Oversees and supervises the operation of all electrical, mechanical and civil equipment and auxiliary equipment and ensures functions and projects align with Power Generation's goals and compliance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) guidelines. Also provides direct supervision, staffing, training, coaching and mentoring to IBEW employees. Assigns work, prioritizes tasks, creates work schedules and monitors employees. Provides communication and assistance to Power Generation ESC employees and other Power Generation support departments such as Land, Transportation, Corporate Real Estate, ISTS and Environmental Services. Leads, promotes, fosters, and advances the establishment of a quality safety and speak up culture.

 

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the watershed expert to review and check safe work clearances using Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedures, including clearance walkdowns, proper documentation, print and P&ID verifications, and adherence to LOTO procedures. 
  • Provides expertise, support, and conducts safety training for watershed personnel.
  • Manages and takes action to ensure public safety within operational locations. 
  • Manages and responds to potential releases of hazardous materials.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental requirements. 
  • Works directly with Project Managers, Engineers, and Analysts to properly scope projects for design and functionality, starting from identifying projects to closing out final construction.
  • Advocates Hydro O&M interests during FERC relicensing and decommissioning projects, technical and ecological working committees, and other agency/regulatory/stakeholder proceedings and projects.
  • Represents Hydro O&M during regulatory inspections, and responsible for coordinating follow-up actions such as maintenance, operational exercises, and information/data requests.
  • Responsible for tracking regulatory requirements and documenting compliance using SAP Work Management.
  • Provides technical interface with Operations, Engineering, Construction and Project Management for asset repair and replacement strategies.
  • Manages in-stream release requirements and develops reservoir draw down and fill plans.
  • Uses a full knowledge of reservoir principles, reservoir protection, reservoir management, water rights and regulations as needed to maintain proper reservoir operations.

 

 

 

Supervisory Responsibility

Provides direct supervision, staffing, training, coaching and mentoring to IBEW employees, including 24/7 operations and Switching Centers. Assigns work, prioritizes tasks, prepares work schedules and monitors employees. Also provides communication and assistance to Power Generation ESC employees and other Power Generation support departments such as Land, Transportation, Corporate Real Estate, ISTS and Environmental Services.

 

Qualifications

Minimum

-High School or General Educational Development-GED Diploma

-5 years of experience in Hydro Operations, Maintenance or Engineering

Desired

 Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other related field.
