Department Overview

PG&E’s Power Generation Department manages and operates the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation. These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevation in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains include 68 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstocks, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).


Job Summary

Responsible for the oversight and supervision of repair and maintenance of all electrical, mechanical, and auxiliary structures, systems, and equipment within PG&E’s hydro electrical powerhouses and related facilities. Also provides direct supervision, staffing, training, coaching and mentoring to IBEW employees. Provides technical support to operations, engineering, construction, and project management regarding asset repair and maintenance.  Provides communication and assistance to Power Generation ESC employees.



Job Responsibilities

  • Oversees and supervises Machinists, Electricians,  Electrical and Communication Technicians responsible for the repair and maintenance of all electrical, mechanical, and auxiliary equipment located within hydro electrical powerhouses and related conveyance facilities.
  • Relay operations, testing and reporting.
  • RTU and Telemetry installation and maintenance support.
  • Ensures compliance with safety and environmental requirements. 
  • Manages and takes action to ensure public safety within operational locations. 
  • Supervises the coordination and communication of operational, quality assurance testing, and reporting requirements.
  • Provides technical support to operations, engineering, construction, and project management regarding asset repair and replacement strategies and plans.
  • Provides expertise and support for the investigation and root causes of recordable, motor vehicle, near miss, and external third- party incidents and warnings, provides feedback to customers, and develops resolutions to eliminate deficiencies.
  • Provides key input to the strategic investment process. 
  • Identifies and develops recommendations for productivity improvements and executes corrective actions plans to decrease operating costs.
  • Provides expertise, support, and conducts safety training for watershed personnel.
  • Acts as a supportive representative for Hydro Operations and Maintenance during regulatory inspections and provides support/expertise regarding inquiries for data/information and resolution of maintenance issues.
  • Provides technical interface with Operations, Engineering, Construction and Project Management for asset repair and replacement strategies.
  • Provides support as needed to the communications with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regarding potential actions/impacts from regulatory relicensing and decommission projects, ecological and technical committees, and other proceedings and/or projects related to hydro maintenance.
  • Assists as needed with the monitoring, tracking, and documentation of regulatory requirements related to hydro generation operations.
  • Ensures maintenance work, including regulated preventative and corrective, is completed as scheduled and to quality expectations, while monitoring compliance to standards and specifications.  Ensures appropriate documentation of these activities.
  • Develops and/or executes action plans to address deficiencies in process or employee skill/knowledge and track the progress of those plans.
  • Identifies and pursues productivity improvements and implements work practices to reduce maintenance costs while meeting corporate and regulatory compliance.
  • Investigates incidents and develops corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence. Investigates and conducts root cause analysis of recordable, motor vehicle and near miss incidents, warnings, and develops corrective actions to resolve deficiencies.
  • Utilize work management (SAP) and other tools to support effective management of the watershed assets and resources.
  • Performs routine observations of work in progress and Maintenance activities to ensure safe and proper work practices are adhered to. 
  • Leads, promotes, fosters, and advances the establishment of a safety and non-accident culture.
  • Investigates external third party public safety issues/incidents and provides feedback to customers.

Supervisory Responsibility

Provides direct supervision, staffing, training, coaching and mentoring to IBEW employees. Assigns work, prioritizes tasks, prepares work schedules and monitors employees. Also provides communication and assistance to Power Generation ESC employees and other Power Generation support departments such as Land, Transportation, Corporate Real Estate, ISTS and Environmental Services.




  • High School or General Educational Development-GED Diploma
  • 5 years of experience in Hydro Operations, Maintenance or Engineering
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other related field.
